R2R Electric Rangemaster OC44

The pedal version of the best Rangemaster I've ever played — this time with OC44 black glass germanium transistors. Welcome back to Edge of Breakup.

In this short demo the R2R Electric R2RGeMaster Treble Booster (pedal format, OC44 black glass version) takes center stage — running with the Frank Brothers Arcade Goldtop loaded with Lollar Mini Humbuckers, into the Benson Amps Monarch.

I demoed the amp-top-box version of the R2RGeMaster a few months ago and loved it immediately. The amp-top version featured NOS Philips/Mullard AC107 black glass transistors with a 6-position NOS input capacitor switch. This is the standalone pedal format version — and Chris has built this one around OC44 black glass germanium transistors, a different but equally exceptional NOS device with its own character. The OC44 is a particularly sought-after transistor for treble booster circuits — tight in the low end with a cutting, glassy top that opens up the high-mid harmonic content of whatever guitar signal it receives.

The Lollar Mini Humbuckers installed in the Frank Brothers Arcade Goldtop are a genuinely interesting pairing for a treble booster — the Mini Humbucker sits tonally between a full humbucker and a single coil, with a clear, bright top end that reveals the R2RGeMaster's character clearly at every gain position of the guitar volume knob. The glassy setting explored at 01:52 is the one I keep coming back to.
