This build houses two distinct transistor voicings in one Fuzz Face-style circuit — a switchable Ge mode built from Mullard CV7005 and Texas Instruments 2N1307 germanium transistors, and a Si mode built from OC202 silicon. All NOS, spanning the 1950s through 1970s, hand-selected by Sof.
Ge Mode (explored from 02:30) delivers the classic warm, harmonically complex germanium Fuzz Face character — explored across bridge and neck humbucker positions with extensive volume knob cleanup from 03:42, including a particularly dramatic cleanup with the volume knob rolled all the way down to 1 at 05:00.
Si Mode (explored from 05:56) shifts to a tighter, more temperature-stable, slightly more aggressive character courtesy of the OC202 — compared directly against the Ge mode's cleanup response across neck and bridge positions. The Bias control is explored from 08:10, opening up a range of gate and sustain character within Si mode, with volume knob cleanup revisited at 08:57.
The demo closes back in Ge Mode from 09:42, comparing high fuzz gain settings against the volume knob cleanup one more time — a direct bookend to the opening section.
The Sunbear '62 SB-PAT# Humbuckers — short-length Alnico V magnets referencing the brief Gibson transitional era between the PAF and Patent Number decal — bring a bright, spanky character reminiscent of the best vintage SG pickups. Bridge 7.7K / Neck 6.8K. The Emerson Custom Treble Bleeds keep that clarity intact through every cleanup sweep in this demo.
