Dazatronyx Germanium Amplifier
Dazatronyx returns to the channel — this time with the Class A Germanium Amplifier, a vintage-voiced treble booster that's not for the hi-fi crowd. Welcome back to Edge of Breakup.
In this episode the Dazatronyx Class A Germanium Amplifier takes center stage — featuring the Baum Guitars Wingman, into the Benson Amps Monarch 2x12" via the Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander, with the Echo Fix EF-X3 Tape Echo/Spring Reverb/Analog BBD Chorus throughout.
Dazatronyx is Darron Thornbury, building pedals by hand in Melbourne, Australia. The Germanium Amplifier has been part of the Dazatronyx lineup since the beginning — a Class A single-transistor boost built around a PNP germanium "tin can" transistor, hand-selected for low leakage and suitable gain, individually biased for that specific transistor's character. No two germanium transistors are identical, so no two Germanium Amplifiers sound exactly alike.
This is not a clean boost and Darron is explicit about that. The transistor runs at its limits — a hard strum causes the circuit to break up, and the output has its own levels of distortion and grit built into the character. It's a germanium amplifier in the Dallas Rangemaster tradition: a vintage-voiced boost that reshapes tone, adds sustain, and slams an amp or fuzz's input stage with warm, rounded harmonic content. Best appreciated by fuzz players.
Three EQ modes via the frequency selection switch: Mid (effective at boosting for drive without the low end getting flabby — the most amp-pushing focused setting), Bright (slightly fuller than a classic treble booster — brighter but not thin), Full Cream (extra body and fat tone — point it straight up and leave it there). The Ge/Si switch mechanically hot-swaps the transistor — Si mode offers less background noise and sharper clipping, useful in extreme temperatures or for a different gain texture. Note: expect a small pop when switching between Ge and Si.
Power note: positively grounded circuit — requires isolated power supply or battery. Not compatible with daisy-chain power.
