The Benmaster is Benson's idealized interpretation of one of the most misunderstood circuits of the tweed era — the 5E7 Fender Bandmaster. Compared to the cleaner, more direct 5F6A Bassman, the 5E7's inefficient power supply, unconventional phase inverter, and loose feel combine to create something completely different: a compressed, greasy bark with a glowing halo around every note. Alive, vocal, and unapologetically rock and roll — the flaws on paper are exactly what give it its voice.
Full specs: 35 watts. 2x 5881 power tubes. 2x 12AX7 preamp tubes. 1x 5AR4 rectifier. Three Weber 10A125A Alnico speakers, lightly doped for the perfect balance of punch, swirl, and compression. Custom Soursound transformer set. Dovetailed pine cabinet with a birch ply baffle. Controls: Volume, Treble, Bass, Presence — classic and purposeful, no more knobs than the circuit needs.
Explored across the demo: lower gain settings from 02:37 with volume knob cleanup at 03:52, Bass knob sweep from 05:22, progressive gain increases through noon (06:58), 3 o'clock (08:53), and fully cranked (09:35), then dropped to the lowest possible gain at 09:50. Treble and Presence explored from 10:26.
Ron Ellis' '50s LRP Humbuckers — a replica of the exact PAFs found in Duane Allman's 1957 Goldtop — give the Benmaster's compressed, greasy voice a genuinely vintage-correct foundation, with the Emerson Custom Premier Pro pots and Treble Bleeds keeping the volume knob cleanup effortless throughout.
The Expresso FX Ge Boost Mini — built around an NOS Philips OC141 germanium transistor — enters from 11:17, adding warmth, compression, and harmonic density without masking the Benmaster's character. Volume brought back to noon at 14:12, with the Effectrode Tube Vibe joining from 16:35 for rich, psychedelic modulation that stacks beautifully with this circuit.
